Several new food and dining concepts are preparing to open around Hillsborough County, ranging from Jamaican patties and barbecue to a sprawling grocery, cafe and bottle shop.

Here are four openings to keep on your radar.

Juici Patties — Tampa

Address: 2705 University Square Dr, Suite 130, Tampa, FL 33612

Status: A soft opening for friends and family is planned for September 5, with the restaurant expected to remain open afterward. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for September 19 with music, a DJ and other festivities.

What to expect: Juici Patties is bringing its Jamaican fast-casual concept to the University Square area near USF. The Tampa restaurant is the first of two confirmed Tampa Bay locations from franchisee Tifany Hollingsworth and business partner Fredrik Moe, with a second store targeted for St. Petersburg around December.

Menu highlights: Jamaican-style patties lead the menu, with fillings including classic beef, spicy beef, jerk beef, cheesy beef, curry chicken and jerk chicken. Meat-free choices include vegetable and spinach patties, while combos can add items such as coco bread and plantain chips alongside desserts and Jamaican soft drinks.

Who’s behind it: Hollingsworth is developing the restaurants with her cousin Fredrik Moe, who already operates multiple Juici Patties locations in Jamaica. The family has a multigenerational connection to Jamaican patties dating back to Hollingsworth’s great-grandfather, who operated a bakery that sold them. The partners ultimately plan six Juici Patties locations around Tampa Bay.

Liberty Smokehouse — Tampa

Address: 310 E Waters Ave, Tampa, FL 33604

Status: An exact opening date has not been announced. Owner Bryan Jacobs said the restaurant is prepared to move forward once its remaining approvals are completed.

What to expect: After four years operating as a Tampa Bay pop-up and food truck, Liberty Smokehouse is moving into its first permanent restaurant. The brick-and-mortar will use a hybrid counter-service setup, with customers ordering at the counter before culinary team members deliver food and interact with tables.

The food truck will remain active after the restaurant opens, with Jacobs planning to shift more of its activity toward communities including St. Petersburg, Safety Harbor, Plant City, Wesley Chapel and Lutz.

Menu highlights: Liberty Smokehouse combines regional American barbecue with Jacobs’ French culinary training. Smoked meats will anchor the menu, but the kitchen will also incorporate curing, brining, pickling and Koji aging into items such as brisket burgers, meats, kimchi and hot sauce.

Seasonal chef-driven dishes will build around smoke and live fire, with French preparations such as coq au vin and cassoulet among the inspirations. The restaurant is also pursuing a beer and wine license and plans to work with local breweries on pairings.

Hours: Initial service is planned to begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the restaurant sells out. A brunch program could follow in the future, while complete regular hours remain to be announced.

Who’s behind it: Bryan Jacobs, a Navy corpsman and French-trained chef, created Liberty Smokehouse after losing his younger brother, Marine Lance Cpl. Kevin Jacobs, to veteran suicide in 2014. Jacobs also plans to revive Vet to Chef, a program aimed at helping veterans rediscover purpose and develop culinary skills.
