The owners of Birria El Gordo in Marietta have officially opened their elevated Mexican concept in Buckhead, owner Nestor Pineda told Business Debut in an interview.

El Gordo, Pineda said, is bringing "a traditional taqueria with a modern twist" to 546 Main St NE, Atlanta, GA 30324. The kitchen manager of El Gordo is Jose Toledo, who hails from Mexico City. Toledo will prepare various dishes according to authentic Mexican tradition, such as al pastor trompo – vertically spit grilled pork.

The full bar emphasizes mezcal and tequila. Cocktails are named after Chicana movies like the "Selena" or the "Up in Smoke."

The space yields seating for up 66 seats, 20 of which are in El Gordo's outdoor space.

In the interview, Pineda reported that Birria El Gordo was the first brick and mortar to serve birria tacos in the Atlanta-area back in April 2021. Now, with El Gordo, Pineda intends to excite Atlanta again with a modern take on the traditional taqueria.
