South House Brewing is preparing to debut in a historic building in downtown Nashville, Georgia, led by George Mathis, a retired editor from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The brewery will open at 109 S Davis St, Nashville, GA 31639, in the former home of Dessa’s by Sondra—a boutique owned by Mathis’ mother, Sondra Pickard.

Mathis, along with his wife Lynn Mathis and brother Taylor Pickard, is revitalizing the 1905 building and aims to open the brewery on September 24th, Sondra Pickard’s birthday.

The brewery will feature a three-barrel brewing system, six fermenters, and a small kitchen. A homebrewer since the 1980s, Mathis plans to offer two flagship beers: Berrien Beach Lager and South House Pale Ale. The taproom will also serve other house-brewed beers and a curated wine selection.

The menu will focus on farm-to-table meals with a health-conscious approach—no deep frying. Dinner will feature upscale offerings such as ribeyes and seasonal specials, while lunch will be a more casual yet high-quality experience. The design will reflect what Mathis describes as “faded elegance.”

Dessa’s by Sondra originally opened in the 1940s and was purchased by Pickard in the early 1980s. The boutique closed in 2024, paving the way for this next chapter.

A resident of Avondale Estates, Mathis drew inspiration from neighborhood breweries like Lost Druid, Wild Heaven, Three Taverns, and Little Cottage. Following his retirement, he decided to bring that small-brewery charm to South Georgia.

Keep an eye out for South House Brewing later this summer or early fall.
