MIAMI, FL — Portofino Fresh Market plans to open by the end of December, bringing a compact but fully equipped fresh market, deli, bakery, and hot food program to 2200 NE 2 Ave, Miami, FL 33137, owner Jose Nunez told Business Debut. The new store sits just four blocks from his long-running delicatessen inside Price Choice Food Market, which is expected to close next year.

What to Expect

Portofino Fresh Market is designed as a “complete store” offering fresh produce, meats, delicatessen items, and a full range of grocery essentials. Despite its small footprint, Nunez said the goal is convenience for nearby residents, especially those in surrounding high-rises.

A key feature will be a full deli, grab-and-go program, bakery, coffee service, and a hot bar offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Outdoor seating for about 45 guests will line 22nd Street, giving customers the option to stay for a meal or take food to go.

The market will feature Boar’s Head products, fresh-baked breads, wraps, sandwiches, and a large selection of prepared foods. Daily offerings will range from egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches to lunchtime favorites such as tuna sandwiches, turkey clubs, burgers, and hot plates like rice and beans with chicken or beef stew. Everything will be made fresh in-house.

Nunez emphasized that Portofino will carry gourmet and specialty products rarely found in traditional grocery stores, including cheeses, wines, and ethnic ingredients spanning Italian, Argentinian, Peruvian, Mexican, and Ecuadorian selections.

Opening Timeline

The team is preparing the space with plans to open by the end of December.

Community Commitment

For Nunez, Portofino Fresh Market is more than a business expansion. After serving the community for two decades through his cafeteria and delicatessen, he said he opened Portofino to remain close to the customers and employees who have supported him for years.

“I didn’t want to lose my customers. I have a good clientele and good customer relations with everyone in the area,” he told Business Debut. He added that many of his 20 employees have been with him for more than 15 years. “They are my family. I felt really bad letting my customers down, and I had to do something for my people.”

Hours

Portofino Fresh Market plans to open daily from 7 a.m. – 12 p.m., with hopes of expanding to 24-hour service in the future.
