SANIBEL, FL — Crooked Cow plans to open a new brick-and-mortar dessert shop in November at 2330 Palm Ridge Rd Unit 9, Sanibel, FL 33957, owner Laurie Verme told Business Debut in a phone interview.

Verme said she and her daughter Alice will bring their traditional homemade ice cream (and their alcohol-infused, THC-infused flavors) to the Sanibel after have to close their previous business Sanibel’s Best Homemade Ice Cream Presents the Crooked Cow following Hurricane Ian.

What to Expect

The Sanibel location will operate as an ice cream parlor that welcomes families while also serving adult-oriented ice creams like alcohol or THC infused flavors.

Inside, a mural is under way along with a turtle tank and fish tanks. Verme said she plans reading programs with local schools and hands-on visits for children to help clean the turtle tank and learn about the animals.

Crooked Cow also participates in the Sanibel Captiva Pink Out project for breast cancer awareness and works with the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Verme shared with Business Debut.

Crooked Cow makes its ice cream in-house, along with a dessert lineup that includes homemade cookies, brownies, chocolates and a chocolate lava cookie "like a lava cake in the shape of a cookie."

The shop will offer four flavors of popcorn, chips and sodas. Verme said she plans three savory flatbreads, including a shrimp flatbread with sun-dried tomatoes and basil, to give later-night guests more options.

Beverages will include boba teas, espresso drinks, slushy-style drinks with popping boba, tapioca boba drinks, matcha boba and protein shakes.

Ownership Background

Verme said she and Alice have operated in the ice cream business since 2017 under several concepts on Sanibel and in Cape Coral.

Before Hurricane Ian, the pair ran an island shop known as Sanibel’s Best Homemade Ice Cream Presents the Crooked Cow. Verme recalled that the storm on September 28, 2022, destroyed their Sanibel home and shuttered the business.

Verme and her daughter relocated to Orlando for about 10 months and later reopened in Cape Coral as Crooked Cow. The brand now includes an alcohol-infused and regular ice cream shop on Del Prado Boulevard, a trailer at the Slipaway food truck park and a mobile ice cream truck for special events, she told Business Debut.

Opening Timeline

Verme said the target opening date is on or around November 15.
