AVONDALE ESTATES, GA – Cremalosa, the handcrafted Italian gelato shop founded by chef and food writer Meredith Ford, is preparing to open its new expanded location at 70 N Avondale Rd, Avondale Estates, GA 30002, this fall, two months away. The beloved shop had previously operated in Decatur for five years and closed, while currently awaiting the completion of construction, Ford told Business Debut.

“It will be nice to be able to be seen from the street and be at street level,” Ford said. “The new space is larger, brighter, and more open; it’s going to be a really good-looking space.”

The new location will be a fast-casual setup, allowing guests to order at the counter, with occasional table service when needed, in a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere.

A Taste of Italy With Southern Flair

Cremalosa is best known for its daily, house-made gelato and sorbet crafted in the Italian tradition, but with flavors that reflect Ford’s Southern roots. Along with various recently added pastries, the new location will provide a daily changing selection of 10 to 12 gelati and sorbetti. Tiramisu, Boston cream cupcakes, ganache tarts with seasonal fruit, flourless Torte Caprese, and seasonal cakes like caramel ginger and pumpkin spice are among the delights that guests may enjoy.

Cremalosa also plans to expand its beverage offerings. In addition to the popular boozy shakes, including “The Elvis,” a banana pudding gelato blended with bourbon and peanut butter, the new location will feature a spritz bar. Seasonal spritzes such as limoncello, Hugo, pomegranate pear, spiced apple, and even chocolate mint will be served alongside dessert martinis.

From Food Writer to Gelato Master

Before launching Cremalosa, Ford had a long career in the food world as a pastry chef and culinary instructor before moving into food writing. She served as a dining critic for both The Providence Journal and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

After training with Italian gelato masters, Ford opened Cremalosa in February 2020, just weeks before the global shutdown. Despite early challenges, the shop quickly became a destination for handcrafted gelato with heart.

Ford’s daughter, Truett Ford, also helped her in running the business and implemented Italian-style coffee with an entire espresso program through her expertise.
